April 2011 Challenge of the Month: Walk It Off

imageWalk It Off

This month’s challenge is to up your movement by walking more.  As I’m sure you’ve read, doctors recommend walking around 10000 steps per day (or more) to promote an active lifestyle.

I am pretty sure I don’t walk that much, especially at my desk job.  The bathroom isn’t that far away and I don’t have to travel through the building often.  BUT, that doesn’t mean I couldn’t get up off of my hiney and walk around on my own.

I don’t love walking, as I’ve said before.  But I’m willing to take 30 days and challenge myself to see how many steps I can do in a month.

I don’t expect you to do 10000 steps per day.  I just want you to make an effort to walk more over the next 30 days.

Most of us sit for 8 hours or so at our jobs.  This has shown to be exceedingly dangerous, as our fluids just pool where they are, rather than move around and go to the correct places.  I want us to do something about that.

You will need a pedometer to get an accurate reading of your steps.  Or you need some sort of monitor that measures distance.  These are very easy to find at most stores (Target, Walmart, etc.) or Amazon.

So WALK IT OFF!

The Rules:

1.  Leave your comment on this post to announce your intent to commit to the challenge.  You must do so by Wednesday, April 6.  If you can’t commit to this one, don’t worry – there are 9 more coming!

2.  If you have a blog, it would be great if you could do a weekly summary of what you did for the challenge.

3.  If you don’t have a blog, I would love to receive a weekly summary via email of what you did for the challenge.  OR, you can always do a guest post for me (meaning you write it and I post it here) about what you did.

4.  On April 30, I will enter all of the participant names into a drawing.  The winner receives:

  • One (1) $25.00 gift certificate to Amazon.com AND
  • Gets to choose a charity to which I will donate $25 in her/his name.

Okay?

Ready, set, GO!

I’d really like to do this, but I am not sure if my pedometer is in my suitcase or not (the one I left in DC this week). If it’s not there, I have to wait till Friday to start – but I’m 90% sure I can do that. Is that okay?

Hey Sweetie! I think I’m going to sit (no pun intended!) this month’s challenge out. I try to walk when possible & know that I should do more, but my lower back is STILL giving me a lot of grief. The more I’m on my feet, the more it bothers me. I go to yet another doctor (a pain specialist) this coming week.

I’d love to be part of the challenge! I am on vacation till next Wednesday (will be working out- but don’t have my pedometer with me). If that is an acceptable time to begin tracking then I am game. xoxo, Renae

I’m in Angela!! I’m allowed to run right?? Can’t wait to get 10,000 even on my less active days – I have a pedometer and everything ready!!

Yup, you can still run. :D

By the way.. I remember learning that 2000 steps is about 1 mile.. so 10,000 steps is about 5 miles. For those that have access to a track or gym, yet no pedometer, this is a great way to keep track of steps!

I have to say that I do try to find time to walk at work and home because I’m getting older. They built a park near us, so my husband and I have been walking the two mile trail on a regular basis. At work I have different friends I walk with on different days. Since people are on different schedules, I set up different partners based on their availability. Then we walk a floor, walk a flight of stairs, walk another floor, walk another flight of stairs for seven floors. This is how I get my lunch time exercise. I was lax before, but I seem to have picked up speed and dedication with the more I do. I’m not a calorie counter, or a dieter, but I think if I can get my legs moving it will be so much better for me.

If I am already doing it, can I be counted too?

PS – Smart phones have pedometer aps.
